Mouth Watering Culinary Delights
Maldives is a series of amazing coral islands located in the Indian Ocean. With all year round sun shine, white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees, Maldives is world renowned as a romantic travel destination. Although these enticing islands have a tropical climate throughout the year with high humidity levels, the heat is considerably brought down by the cool Indian Ocean breezes. The local people of Maldives are considered to be descendants from early settlers from India and Sri Lanka. They are known today as Dhivehis. The economy of this set of alluring coral islands is mainly run by tourism and fishing industries. Perhaps this is quite obvious as the islands are a traveller’s paradise and they are surrounded by the sparkling blue Indian Ocean.
Being an island nation it is no surprise that Maldivian cuisine is mainly dominated by a wide variety of sea food, in particular tuna. Maldivian dishes draws heavily from South Indian and Sri Lankan culinary traditions. They are mainly hot, spicy and almost always flavoured with coconut. A typical traditional Maldivian meal usually consists of rice, a clear fish broth called garudhiya along with lime, chilli and onions as side dishes. Even Maldivian snacks are based on a wide range of sea food. However, almost all resorts are offer international cuisine as well including Thai and Italian.
Engaging in water sports is a must do when visiting Maldives. Diving and snorkelling are two of the most popular activities among visitors. This is more so as the water clarity is excellent, and fascinating underwater life is in abundance in the calm waters around the islands. You will simply be mesmerized by the colourful coral reefs, stunning sea creatures and ship wrecks found under the emerald ocean. Boats and diving gear can easily be hired from any of the resorts scattered across the islands of Maldives.
