Maldives is one of the most beautiful islands in the world to visit. It is often a honeymoon destination or a place for wonderful and serene relaxation, not forgetting the once in a lifetime vacation. When in the Maldives, one has to try the cuisine that is on offer. Maldivian cuisine is another topic altogether. Though the country is known for the beautiful beaches, hotels and water bungalows, the food there is simply exotic and amazing. You have not really experienced the country until you have experienced its food.
With a strong influence form neighbouring countries such as India and Sri Lanka, the three staples of Maldivian cuisine is coconut, starch and fish! The food is mainly in curries, which they refer to as riha and it normally comes together with a dish called roshi. This is the Maldivian version of the flattened bread you find in India. In contrast to its neighbouring countries, Maldives uses fewer spices and is big on the sweetness and salty nature of the food, giving it a rich, unique and exotic taste. It is no wonder really that fish is a staple food of the islands, given the islands are of course surrounded by water. Find this dish either in a curried form, fried or even steamed. Coconut is used for curries and is rich in its milky consistency and adds vibrancy to all meals that use it.
Try the Kulhi Boakibaa which is a fish cake that is normally eaten as a snack and made from tuna and coconut. This spicy favourite is a favourite of most visitors to the Maldives and has a great appeal to all those who love seafood! The Bambukeylu Hiti is also a visitor and local favourite of the island. Commonly known as breadfruit, this can be eaten dry or as a coconut milk curry.
Staying in Maldives resorts are great and check out the Maldives spa resorts too such as the Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas when searching for star class accommodation. The curries are the ones that you will want to or rather should try the most. The chicken curry, cooked with man spices will make your mouth water. The bashi curry, or commonly known as eggplant curry too is a favourite and tastes absolutely delicious.
