Although a special administrative region of China, Macau operates like an independent country, even having its own currency (Macau Pataca). Separated from Hong Kong by the Pearl River estuary, it is widely known as the most densely populated nation on the planet, and is one of the biggest gambling destinations in Asia. First time visitors may be forgiven for mistaking this region for a European country. Until 1999, it was once an overseas territory of Portugal, and its cityscapes bear the marked influence of its colonial history. The island is divided into several districts. Taipa contains the international airport and is a major residential centre. Cotai has the best casinos and Macau Peninsula is connected to mainland China and is a hub for tourist activity.
The Macau Food Festival is an annual event celebrating food and drink from around the world. Now in its 11th year, it is one of the country’s most popular festivals. The Food Festival provides visitors with a terrific opportunity to sample delicious Asian, European and Chinese dishes. The event also features an amusement park which puts on live performances, games and competitions and elaborate firework displays. Visitors can attend seminars on food and beverages, sample traditional cuisine and learn how to cook tasty dishes.
The festival in 2010 was very grand as it was also the 10th anniversary of the festival, and even special commemorative stamps were issued. This year the festival will last 17 days, from the 11th to the 27th of November. It will take place at Sai Van Lake Square. Tourists visiting Macau during this time period should not miss the event.
Tourists visiting here will find many luxury hotels Macau to choose from. Owing to the convenient location of Galaxy Macau Resort Hotel, guests can enjoy numerous sightseeing opportunities while minimising the hassles of travelling. One of the best Macau hotels, this resort is only a 10 minute drive from the airport. A number of large casinos and high end malls are located near the hotel as well. With so many things to do, visitors will find that there is never a dull moment in this region.
