Traditional Dishes

When it comes to traditional dishes, there are some local favourites well worth trying when dining at restaurants in Oman; these include “shuwa”, a slow-cooked goat or lamb dish, “meshkak” which is various grilled meats on sticks or skewers, a fish dish called “mashuai” and “hares” made with wheat and meat.

Sweet Treats

For dessert, locals love to eat a dish called “halwa”; this wheat-based treat is made with ingredients like ghee, semolina, cardamom, rose water, almonds and sugar which give it a divine taste. Also popular are Omani dates which are eaten plain and served with coffee or used to create different desserts or sweets.

Omani Coffee

No foodie adventure would be complete without trying some traditional Omani coffee referred to as “kahwa”. Usually drunk without the addition of milk, this coffee is generally served with dates and has a sublime flavour enriched with ingredients like cardamom; it is often offered to guests as a sign of hospitality too.
