Bali Cuisine
Gorge or be Gluttonous
Probably the most sought after food item by the Balinese is Lawar or Bali Guling, both of which are meat based food items. Though a majority of the other parts of Indonesia are inhabited by Muslims, Bali is not. Hence, pork is a popular meat that no one wishes to forego. Lawar is an exotic dish that contains a dozen nutrients by virtue of the wholesome ingredients that go into it; grated coconut, jackfruit, green beans, shrimp paste etc. All these are folded in with the main constituent, which is pig’s blood and served to all at meal times. Tender or baby pig, is what Bali Guling is made of. It is a true favourite among the home crowd but is difficult to prepare in a hurry. Turtle meat is also a traditional Balinese dish that most foreigners find fascinating. The most exciting course for visitors is the Nasi Goreng; a spiced up version of fried rice that is served with an assortment of vegetables and seafood or meat that is mixed into the rice itself.
The main course consists of rice and all others are accompaniments or add – on items. The most obvious accompaniment is fresh seafood; fetched by the local fisher folk, sautéed or marinated by the best chefs of Bali and presented in the most appetizing of manners. Food in this part of the world is generally slightly spicy like that in most other Asian countries. Many condiments go into the preparation of food, giving it flavour, colour and a tempting aroma.
Any vegetarians who are hoping to visit Bali need not be alarmed as there is a host of vegetarian restaurants to choose from as well. Healthy spinach tossed in mouth watering spices, tofu sautéed with local sauces and jackfruit curry can be found at their very own food parlours.
When your mind needs relaxation, your souls needs refreshment and your body needs hearty food to reenergize itself, keep a few of the Bali hotels in mind. Many a Bali hotel serves delightful traditional Balinese cuisine, so if you decide to settle down for a few days in a comfortable abode such as the Anantara Seminyak, Bali there would be an abundant supply of the best food in town.
