Western Market, a shopping experience like no other
Hong Kong’s Western Market is a fascinating place to explore for visitors to the city. Situated in Hong Kong island’s Sheung Wan area, the Western Market has retained its allure over the years.
Dating back to 1906, the imposing building features an exterior of red brick and an impressive granite arch rising majestically over the entranceway. Showcasing typical Edwardian style architecture, the Western Market building is considered to be a masterpiece of its kind. It remains a key attraction for connoisseurs of this kind of architecture. Originally the market consisted of two sections, the North Block and South Block, but unfortunately the latter was demolished in 1980; however the North Block has been retained and preserved.
In 1990 the Western Market was conferred the status of a historical monument and was closed to the public but after strong pressure from many organizations and individuals the market was opened once more in 1991.
Today the Western Market contains shops originally located in the narrow alleyways of the Central district which primarily are in the business of retailing clothing. The market also features stalls which vend traditional handicrafts as well as several cafes.
The Western Market is renowned for the variety of food items which it sells, attracting both natives and visitors desiring quality foodstuffs. The market contains a Chinese dessert shop, a bakery in the Bavarian style and numerous other eateries which have retained their popularity.
The visitor will notice some unique aspects to the Western Market centre. In an endeavour to eliminate the uniformity and boredom of most shopping centres, each shop on the ground floor is required to feature merchandise that is unique. Here the visitor will find a multitude of different varieties of collectibles, ranging from stamps and model buses to antiques and watches.
The first floor is devoted to clothes and textiles; the shopkeepers are vastly experienced and have a masterly knowledge of their area of specialization. You will also find custom tailors who will design excellent clothes according to your specifications.
The much praised Treasure Inn Seafood Restaurant is located on the second floor, offering performances of live Chinese opera. The uppermost floor of the building features the Grand Stage which is an ideal venue for couples to enjoy a romantic dinner in an attractive ambience.
The visitor seeking a 4 star hotel Hong Kong will find an excellent accommodation in the Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong, an establishment of quality offering excellent Hong Kong hotel suites. This fine hotel never disappoints its patrons providing superior amenities and service.
