The Southern Thai food in Krabi is a delight to enjoy as it carries strong influences from Malaysian and Muslim cuisines with the signature flavours of the Thai culinary world. Here are 5 of the best dishes to try when you visit Krabi in the south of Thailand.
Pad Thai
This is a must-try if you’re in any part of Thailand as you’ll find it at any of the street food stalls, diners, or even at hotels like Avani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort. Pad Thai is essentially a serving of stir-fried flat rice noodles seafood, tofu, chicken or pork, bean sprouts, fish sauce, egg and shallots. All of the ingredients are prepared in a hot wok and are served with roasted peanuts, chillies and fresh herbs.
Khao Man Kai
Translating to ‘oiled rice chicken’, this is a Thai version of Hainanese chicken rice from Singapore. It is a dish of fragrant rice that is cooked in a flavourful broth and served with tender chicken and in most cases with a salad, a bowl of clear soup and a spicy dip.
Tom Yum
This is an extremely popular hot and sour soup that you’ll find in any Krabi Thai restaurant. The soup is best known for its strong flavour, made from a broth that contains various spices and herbs like lemongrass, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, crushed chilli peppers and more. It is served with a variety of meat options like beef, pork, chicken or shrimp.
Kaeng Tai Pla
This flavourful curry is unique to Southern Thailand and refers to a sauce made from fermented fish entrails. It is noted for its high level of spice and umami flavours with typical ingredients like bamboo shoots, eggplants, yard-long beans, coconut milk and fresh chillies. It is usually enjoyed with a separate serving of fresh vegetables and steamed rice.
Yam Naem Khao Thot
Also known as Naem Khluk, this dish is made from crushed balls of curried rice, that is mixed with shredded fermented pork sausage, peanuts, lime juice, sliced shallots, peanuts and herbs. It is usually served with additional fresh greens and herbs.
