One of the joys of exploring new destinations is the chance to sample local cuisine and, in this regard, Cambodia has plenty to offer; here are some of the best dishes to try on your visit.

Amok

One of the most beloved dishes in Cambodia, amok is a type of steamed curry traditionally made with fish. The curry consists of kroeung (a herb and spice paste) and coconut milk and has a consistency that’s similar to mousse; part of the process involves steaming the fish in banana leaves that lend to the flavour. At properties like Anantara Angkor Resort, you can even learn to make Khmer fish amok yourself!

Chicken Curry

Chicken curry is another top local dish that can be enjoyed at an eatery in Phnom Penh or a restaurant in Siem Reap. You get different variations depending on the ingredients used which can include everything from lemongrass and kaffir lime to sugar palm and garlic. Also popular is kari sach moan or chicken red curry that’s generally served on special occasions including weddings.

Khmer Noodles

Locally known as nom banh chok, Khmer noodles are a much-loved breakfast dish and are widely sold on the streets too. The freshly made noodles are usually topped with green curry gravy with a fish base along with ingredients like ginger, garlic, turmeric, and lemongrass that provide it with a signature flavour. Toppings can include long beans, banana flowers, and cucumbers.

Stuffed Frogs

Last but by no means least is what foodies may consider a more exotic offering called kangkep baob or stuffed frogs! It’s not uncommon to see roadside BBQs where stuffed frogs are grilled over hot coals inside bamboo pieces. For stuffing, apart from frog meat, ingredients like red chillies, minced pork, kroeung and roasted peanuts are used for this delicious culinary creation.
