India is a country known for its diversity. Everything from the language to the dances and even the food changes from state to state. While they may have things in common, each state is unique in its offerings. Tourists who want to sample some of the country’s most exciting and innovative flavours can head over to the southern state of Kerala. Kerala is famous for its lush greenery, picturesque landscapes and rich natural bounty. It is also known for its exquisite cuisine, which ranks among the best in the country.

Breakfast is a somewhat elaborate affair. One has a range of options from puttu (steamed coconut shavings and rice powder); idli (a sort of cake); dosa (a flat pancake that is made in a variety of ways) and a multitude of associated curries. Like in most south Asian countries, rice is a staple food and lunch typically consists of rice and several side dishes. Keralan cuisine makes heavy use of coconuts, which can be found in large numbers. In addition to acting as a flavouring agent, the milk extracted from coconuts is used to make curries thicker and creamier. Dishes to try out when in Kerala include sadhya (which is a traditional buffet served on a banana leaf) which comes with an astounding variety of curries.

Dinner meals are often similar to lunch, although the rice maybe replaced with rice porridge. Those visiting Kerala should also make a note to try out the local seafood. After all, the state is covered in a vast interconnecting network of backwaters and has a thriving fishing industry. Not only is the local seafood fresh, it is also extremely delicious. Keralan desserts, while extremely sweet, are usually served warm. This includes payasam, made from milk, cashews, and dry grapes; and Kozhikode.

Tourists can taste the many flavours of the state at a Kerala resort like Poovar Island Resort. This beach hotel Kerala is known for its top notch service, elegantly decorated room and its excellent beachside location. There are also plenty of good restaurants nearby where guests can sample the delicious local cuisine and take their taste buds on an unforgettable gastronomical tour!
